Here at Western Gateway STB, we want to inspire the next generation of transport professionals. That’s why we’re partnering with universities in the region, and welcoming and supporting interns into the team.

Projects worked on

Some of the work areas and projects our interns have worked on include:

  • Creating an index of accessible transport accessibility challenges
  • Working on the Electric Vehicles cross-pavement project
  • Evaluation of the Tisbury Loop Strategic Outline Business case
  • A multi-modal study for Dorset and Electric vehicle infrastructure work
  • Developing a rural mobility pilots directory
  • Delivering a coach industry update for our coach forum
  • Creating coded survey responses to improve rail accessibility

Many of our interns also attend our programme team meetings, which join together local authorities to share important updates and insights.

Skills learned

Some of the skills that our interns have developed include:

  • QGIS fundamentals
  • Excel improvements
  • Understanding transport governance
  • Financial processes appraisal
  • Vision-led planning

And importantly, our interns built on their workplace interpersonal skills, including communication, presentation, organisational and collaborative skills.
