Have Your Say: Freight Industry Survey for the South West

Western Gateway and Peninsula Transport Sub-national Transport Bodies (STBs) are inviting views from across the freight and logistics sector in the South West of England to help shape the future of freight movement in the region.

The Freight Industry Survey, launched last week, seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by the sector and how local authorities can best support safe, sustainable, and efficient freight operations, both now and in the future.

Why your input matters

The survey is designed to help local authorities identify practical steps they can take to enable a thriving, low-carbon, and resilient freight industry. Your insights will directly inform regional strategies and action plans.

Feedback will be analysed and shared with the most relevant local authority departments/partners to support better decision-making and targeted interventions.

What the survey covers

We are gathering input across five key themes that reflect the priorities of the freight and logistics sector:

  1. Skills in logistics – Understanding the skills required, where the gaps exist, and how these affect the industry’s growth and resilience.
  2. HGV overnight parking – Identifying current and future needs, quality and availability of facilities, and the impacts of shortfalls.
  3. Road network maintenance – Highlighting areas with poor surfacing, access concerns, and network resilience challenges.
  4. Fleet decarbonisation – Exploring barriers to low-emission vehicle infrastructure, charging and refuelling, and opportunities for support.
  5. Space for logistics – Understanding the need for operational and strategic logistics space and the barriers to accessing it.

You can choose to respond only to the themes that are most relevant to you.

How to take part

We encourage all freight operators, logistics businesses, hauliers, Universities and research organisations as well as industry partners across the South West to take part in this important piece of work.

 Survey deadline: 30 November 2025
